This is an early 19th century PIERCED AND PUNCHED SHEET-IRON / TIN WHALE OIL LANTERN, colorless fixed blown-molded eight-paneled tapered-form globe within a wire guard, conical form cap with punched slits, small strap-ring handle, base with a band of punched ovals, underside fitted with a removable base
Between 1800 and 1860, whale oil lamps like this one were common. Whale oil lamps burned brightly and were smoke-free compared to candles.
Overall good condition. Some minor rust and patina on the tin. Small dents. No visible chips or cracks on the glass. Wear is consistent with age and use.
