Antique Filipino Tenegre Sword Binangon Visayas Panay Bakunawa Carved Wood 19thC:
$800.00

Up for sale is a highly collectible and rare piece of Filipino ethnographic weaponry. Dating back to the late 19th or early 20th century, this antique Tenegre (also traditionally referred to as a Binangon) is a fantastic specimen from the Visayas region, specifically the islands of Panay or Negros. It features a beautifully hand-carved wooden pommel meticulously shaped into a traditional Bakunawa, a mythical horned sea serpent from Visayan folklore, showcasing incredible regional craftsmanship. This sword is a wonderful find for serious collectors of Southeast Asian militaria and historic edged weapons.

The single-edged steel blade features a classic chisel-ground profile with a clipped point, showing excellent weight and a completely untouched historic patina. At the base of the hilt, the sword features a solid metal collar or ferrule that remains firmly intact. This historic piece comes complete with its original, matching two-piece wooden scabbard, which features traditional metal banding.

Regarding the condition report, please review all photos carefully to assess the piece and see the condition for yourself. The blade shows a dark, aged patina with expected signs of wear, surface oxidation, and character consistent with an authentic battlefield weapon of its era. For total transparency, there is evidence of an old, historic repair on the throat of the scabbard showing signs of old soldering. Despite its age and historic use, the sword remains a solid, complete, and highly displayable piece of Philippine history.
