ANTIQUE EXTRA-LARGE WALL ROSARY. LOURDES.
CIRCA 1900. SIX DECADES. HAND-CARVED.
The beads are dark, solid wood. They are oval/barrel shape, about 11mm. The pater beads are round, about 12mm. There are 72 beads total (with several very small beads separating each section). It is a 6-decade rosary. There are 5 beads in the drop (this includes 2 pater beads). There are 67 beads in the loop (6 sets of 10 beads and 7 pater beads).
The overall length of the rosary is 4 foot/48\". The crucifix measures almost 3.5\". The rosary weighs 120.0 grams.
The centerpiece is hand-carved, heart shape. The crucifix is also hand-carved. The corpus appears to be brass. It is tacked into position with very small brass nails/tacks. The corpus is very securely in place on the cross. Carved just below the corpus are the letters MJ. Surrounding the head of Christ is a halo, carved into the wood. There are also several very small circles which fully encircle the head and shoulders of Christ. On reverse are the words: SOUVENIR DE ND DE LOURDES. The word SOUVENIR is encircled by crude rayonnant, carved into the wood.
The rosary is in excellent to very good antique condition. It is sound and solid. The connective chain is strong. The rosary appears to have all the original beads and appears to have never undergone repair or replacement. The beads are unbroken. The centerpiece has a split in the bottom, where the connective chain enters. This appears to have happened when the rosary was crafted. It does not appear to be recent. The rosary has a very nice tone and coloration throughout. To be almost 125 years of age, it has aged beautifully. It is well-crafted. There is truly no telling the full history held within this rosary.
