A beautifully preserved Continental European double-sided wooden butter mold, hand carved in deep relief with two distinct decorative compositions.
One side features a stylized standing female figure crowned with a wreath and framed by laurel garlands, traditional symbols associated with abundance, harvest, and domestic prosperity. The reverse presents a formal urn and foliate motif, a classical design frequently used in early European decorative arts.
Butter molds such as this were used to shape and decorate freshly churned butter for market sales, feast days, or special household occasions. The presence of carving on both sides is a hallmark of earlier and more finely made examples, allowing the board to serve multiple decorative patterns.
