Antique Edwardian Purple Glass Hatpin with Decorative Tassel, c. 1900–1915
A striking antique hatpin dating approximately to the turn of the 20th century/Edwardian period. The large sculptural head features a hand-worked gold-tone metal surface with pierced quatrefoil or four-petal floral openings, five round faceted purple glass stones and applied braided wirework woven through the design.
One of its most distinctive features is the articulated decorative tassel, constructed with ornate openwork bead caps and multiple lengths of fine woven metal chain. The combination of the hammered appearance, openwork floral design, purple glass and elaborate dangling tassel gives the piece wonderful movement and period character.
Hatpins were both decorative and functional accessories, used to secure the large fashionable hats of the late Victorian and Edwardian periods to a woman’s arranged hair. Particularly long examples became fashionable during the first decade of the 1900s.
The purple stones have been tested and register in the glass range. No maker’s marks or hallmarks were found. Metal content has not been professionally determined and is described conservatively as gold-tone metal.
Please note: the remaining steel shank is approximately 3⅝ inches long and appears to have been shortened/broken historically. Original length is unknown.

Antique pre-owned condition with age-related surface wear, patina, discoloration and darkened areas around some attachment/solder points. The steel pin/shank measures approximately 3⅝ inches and appears to have been shortened or broken at some point; its original length is unknown. Purple stones tested in the glass range and remain present. Please examine all photographs closely as they form an important part of the condition description.
