Impressive antique brass Hanukkah (Hanukiah or Hanukkiya) menorah or lamp made in Israel by the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem, that operated between 1909-1939.The design is a classic piece of Judaica, featuring a Moorish architectural style backplate with intricate repoussé work (a metalworking technique in which a sheet of metal is shaped by hammering from the reverse side to create a raised design on the front). The backplate’s embossed design depicts the entrance to the Holy Temple supported by pillars, with seated lions of Judah flanking a menorah, and the Star of David above them.
The Hebrew text near the top reads \"בצלאל\" (Bezalel) and \"ירושלם\" (Jerusalem), confirming its origin.
The text below the lions translate to: “These candles are sacred.”These Bezalel lamps / menorahs were made in Jerusalem in the early 1900s and are considered rare and valuable collectibles in Jewish ceremonial art.The Bezalel school was established by Boris Schatz, and artists like Ze\'ev Raban were key figures in its development.
Measures approximately 9” high x 7” wide x 2” deep.In very good antique condition with patina and some signs of wear consistent with age, use, and storage.
The detachable Shamosh / Shamash (or servant light) is missing. Please enlarge and study all photos as they serve as part of the description and might reveal something I missed.
