Antique Carte de Visite (CDV) — Rebekah Lodge (IOOF) Regalia, c. 1870s
Taylor, Artistic Photographer, Aurora, Illinois
Offered here is a 4.25 x 2.5 inch carte de visite photograph of an unidentified woman photographed wearing fraternal lodge regalia. The centerpiece is a beehive-form medallion pinned at her collar — this specific device is associated with the Rebekah Lodge, the women’s auxiliary of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF), traditionally worn during lodge meetings by members not currently holding an elected office. Additional small pendant charms and a watch-fob chain hang from the medallion, though these secondary emblems could not be conclusively identified from the photograph.
Dating: No revenue tax stamp present on the reverse; rounded mount corners and the studio’s script imprint style point to a date in the 1870s to early 1880s.
Studio: Taylor, Artistic Photographer, Aurora, Illinois (printed script imprint on verso).
Condition: Scattered foxing to mount and image surface; mount corners rounded and intact, no creasing present.
A great find for collectors of Odd Fellows / Rebekah Lodge fraternal history, women’s fraternal orders, or 19th-century American photographica generally.
