Antique carte de visite photograph identified in handwriting on the front and reverse as Lottie Clifford, a nineteenth-century theatrical performer.
Seated portrait showing her wearing an elaborate feather-trimmed hat with trailing ribbons, a dark dress with decorative trim, and a white lace collar. She rests her chin on one hand beside a stack of books.
Photographed by J. Gurney & Son, 707 Broadway, New York. Ornately patterned reverse with photographer’s imprint and a canceled orange two-cent U.S. Internal Revenue Proprietary stamp. The stamp supports an approximately 1864–66 sale date; the portrait could have been taken earlier.
Condition: Age toning, scattered spotting and mottling, light surface scratches, and wear to the mount edges and corners. Pencil identification on both sides. Please review both photographs for condition.
Original mounted antique photograph shown. Handwritten identification is not authenticated as an autograph.
