Up for sale is a remarkable, historically significant collection of six (6) antique"black glass"(deep olive green) utilitarian cylinder bottles. These authentic pieces were legally recovered by a scuba diver in the1970sfrom the waters below the ruins ofFort San Lorenzoat the mouth of theChagres River in Panama.During the 19th-century California Gold Rush, this area served as the primary transit route across the Isthmus of Panama for the 49ers travelling from New York to the West Coast. These bottles are a tangible piece of maritime and colonial history.Physical Characteristics & Manufacturing Clues:
- Glass Composition:Classic mid-19th-century "black glass" composition. While appearing completely opaque black on display, it reveals a beautiful, rich dark olive-green hue when held directly up to a strong light source.
- Form & Technique:These are mouth-blown cylinder bottles featuring crudely hand-applied finishes/lips.
- Base Profile:Deep structural base push-ups (kick-ups) with subtle texturing, faint sand/improved pontil remnants, and standard iron-rod tool marks consistent with mid-1800s manufacturing techniques.
- Dimensions:Heights range from9 1/2" to 10"; base diameters range from2 3/8" to 2 1/2".
Condition Note:
These bottles are structurally stable but display a wonderful, authentic "sea-salvage" character. Expect natural age-related surface wear, internal residue/milky marine patination, and minor glass delamination from over a century underwater. Please note:As highlighted in picture 6, one bottle has an old, clean breach/hole in its base push-up. This does not impact its display value from the side.Provenance Included:
The lot comes complete with a copy of the original 1970s historical typewritten documentation sheet detailing the dive recovery context at Fort San Lorenzo
