DESCRIPTION
Beautiful woven jacquard coverlet, identified in corner panels as "BENJA. / KIEHL / 1837 / LITTY SHOWALDER, indicating the work of Ohio weaver Benjamin Kiehl (1807-1895), made for the client Litty (or Liddy) Showalder. Large reversible coverlet in red, green, blue and beige, with floral medallions, doves, acorns, tulips, etc. The jacquard loom enabled weavers like Kiehl to produce highly detailed patterns, with their credentials woven into them. On larger coverlets, like this one, a central stitched seam was necessary to accomodate the larger piece.
CONDITION
Overall excellent antique condition. Colors bright. No holes, tears or worn areas noted. There is a slight 12" partial separation along the central sewn seam. Two-edged fringe is largely intact (all visible in the images). A LARGE AND BEAUTIFUL EARLY 19TH CENTURY AMERICAN COVERLET IN GREAT CONDITION!
