Antique wood Nkisi power figure.

Made from carved wood, and metal screws, fastened to a carved stand with power stones placed on top

Nkisi are referred to in English as “power figures,” were made by the Congo Tribes, now displaced due to modern development

These figures are, in effect, vessels for containing spiritual forces.

They are considered portable graves, and many include earth or relics from the grave of a powerful individual as a prime ingredient. The powers of the dead then infuse the object.

This one is painted with chalk, grave ash from the body of the high priest mixed with paint and the screws or from different coffin lids of prominent figures in the tribe and adorned with the hand made stone ritual necklace the high priest wore

The metal objects commonly pounded or inserted into the surface of the power figures represent the Nkisis' active roles during rituals or ceremonies. Each nail, screw, blade or metal piece represents a vow, a signed treaty, and an effort to abolish evil. Ultimately, these figures most commonly represent reflections upon socially unacceptable behaviors and efforts to correct them.

Once these figures are deemed full or complete, they would be used as powerful altar totems and for power and protection in an individuals home

This piece was placed in the entrance to the small temple and congregants would touch it for blessings and protection coming in and out

These statues are quite rare and not really made anymore, they are a collectors must have and a practitioners honor to own
