This is an Antique 39 Star 1889 American Flag Elongated Stripes 767676 Pattern 23.5x12.
The 39 star flag was never an official American Flag. In 1889 Flag manufacturers gambled that the Dakota territories were to come into the union as a single state, so they manufactured flags with 39 stars. However, North and South Dakota became the 39th and 40th states, respectively, on Nov. 2, 1889. And then Montana became the 41st state just six days later.
The star pattern is 7, 6, 7, 6, 7, 6 vertically
Measures 23.5” x 12”
This flag was cut from 39 star flag printed cotton fabric yardage
Each side has a selvage edge
The top and bottom are cut edges
The stripes are elongated but can be folded under for framing
2 tears to the fabric -bottom right and left corners
1/2” vertical slit along the right edge
Some fabric aging to the white stripes
Pale red color dye migration into the white stripes
Very suitable for framing
Included will be a small scrap of red stripe fabric to place behind the 2 tears for framing purposes
