Antique 19th C Italian Sorrento Marquetry Book Stand Victorian Inlaid Wood For Sale

Exceptional Antique Italian Sorrento Marquetry Folding Book Stand – Victorian Era, Circa 1880–1900

A beautiful example of traditional Italian decorative woodworking, this exquisite Sorrento-style folding book stand or reading lectern features an elaborate pictorial marquetry composition and an elegant architectural silhouette. Believed to date from the late 19th century, this remarkable piece measures approximately 13.5 inches wide by 12 inches tall and displays the intricate artistry associated with historic Sorrentine craftsmanship. Its striking oval centerpiece depicts a charming pastoral scene featuring two children traveling in a rustic animal-drawn cart, surrounded by countryside scenery and distant village architecture. The detailed illustration is created through contrasting natural wood veneers, producing remarkable depth, texture, and visual interest. A beautifully shaped scrollwork crest, richly figured oval border, warm wood tones, and decorative lower book ledge complete the distinguished Victorian appearance. The folding rear support allows the stand to be displayed at an angle, making it an elegant accessory for an antique library, collector’s study, traditional interior, or curated European antiques collection. This piece displays authentic-looking age-related patina, surface wear, scratches, and visible wood or veneer separations, as shown in the photographs. The precise age, wood species, and geographic origin have not been independently authenticated. An impressive and increasingly difficult-to-find style of decorative book stand, offering timeless craftsmanship, historical character, and exceptional visual appeal.
