An impressive antique 19th-century toleware tray featuring a richly colored pastoral scene of figures dancing and making music beneath the trees.
The central composition depicts a gathering of elegantly dressed figures in a wooded landscape, including a musician, dancing figures, and a woman accompanied by a child. Painted in warm shades of russet, ochre, muted green, and deep red, the scene has an appealing narrative quality reminiscent of traditional European pastoral paintings.
Surrounding the central image is an elaborate border of floral and foliate decoration in subdued copper and gold tones. The raised metal gallery features alternating pierced openings, finely spaced vertical slots, and a continuous beaded upper edge. Gracefully shaped metal handles extend from either end.
The tray retains a deeply aged painted surface, with pronounced craquelure and alligatoring throughout the central composition. Areas of oxidation, paint loss, and surface wear reveal the character of its metal construction and long history of use.
The reverse displays applied reinforcing strips and traditional metal construction details. Generously proportioned at more than 30 inches across, this tray has the scale and presence of a decorative painting while retaining its original utilitarian form.
Equally compelling displayed on a large console, coffee table, or wall, it is an expressive example of pictorial toleware.

Number3 Notes
The distinction of this tray lies in the relationship between its narrative painting and ornamental metalwork. The pastoral scene introduces movement and human character, while the elaborate pierced gallery provides a finely detailed architectural frame. Its considerable scale and richly aged surface give it the visual presence of a painting and the material character of historic decorative metalwork.
