Stunning Antique 1930s Tweed Weekend Suitcase with Rich Multi-Decade Cunard Line Ocean Liner & US Customs Travel Provenance
Up for sale is a beautiful, highly collectible piece of maritime and travel history. This pre-war, hard-sided 18" overnight/weekend suitcase features incredible, authentic vintage travel provenance. It is a stunning display piece for antique collectors, maritime history buffs, or unique home decor.
THE HISTORY & MATCHING LABELS:
This suitcase tells an extraordinary story through its layered exterior decals. It was part of a matching luggage set belonging to a transatlantic passenger whose last name started with the letter "G."
1930s–1940s Cunard White Star "Tourist Class" Label: This blue circular sorting sticker dates to the historic merger era of Cunard and White Star Line (1934–1949). The bold "G" served as an alphabetical sorting marker for the pier porters at customs.
1950s Cunard Line "Stateroom Baggage" Oval Label: A gorgeous orange decal featuring a classic ocean liner illustration, added during a subsequent voyage. This tag instructed deck hands to deliver this bag directly to the cabin.
Late 1950s/1960s U.S. Customs Service "Inspected Baggage" Stamp: A rare, diamond-shaped salmon-pink Treasury Department stamp complete with its unique tracking serial slip "115125 R" (indicating clearance at the Port of New York).
Vintage "Home Economics" Sticker Fragment: A charming retro student decal showing classic mid-century hand illustrations.

CONDITION DETAILS:This suitcase is being sold in Good Vintage Condition with beautiful, authentic character wear that tells the story of its travels:
Exterior Canvas: The tan textured tweed canvas shows minor surface scuffs, light staining, and dark friction marks from genuine past travel.
Hardware: The heavy brass split-lock drawbolt latches are fully functional and pop open smoothly when buttons are slid outward. Note: There is no key included, but the locks remain unlocked and perfectly usable. The metal parts feature an authentic aged patina with light tarnish/oxidation.
Handle & Trim: The original stitched leather handle is intact but shows structural stitching failure and fraying near the base bracket, exposing the inner layer (see photos). The brown leather corner piping shows expected edge scuffs, including one puncture/tear on a corner.
Interior: The original plum/purple satin fabric lining is remarkably clean and structurally sound—a gorgeous hallmark of 1930s luxury luggage. It is complete with its elasticized side storage walls, lid pocket, and matching fabric clothing tie-down ribbons. Typical mild vintage storage scent is present.
