Charming antique crib quilt dating to approximately the 1930s–1940s, featuring 24 hand-appliquéd Dutch doll figures arranged across a softly quilted cream ground.
This delightful folk-art design is a Dutch doll variation related to the beloved Sunbonnet Sue and Overall Sam quilt patterns.
The boys wear bright blue, wide-legged overalls, while the girls are dressed in an assortment of floral and calico-print dresses. Their faces, hair, hands, clothing details, and blanket-stitched outlines were completed by hand, giving every little figure its own personality.
The center is surrounded by a colorful triangular patchwork border, sometimes described as an ice cream cone or pennant-style border. A solid pink border and binding finish the quilt beautifully.
The quilting, appliqué, and decorative embroidery appear to be hand worked, while the outer binding includes machine stitching.
Many of the printed fabrics appear consistent with vintage feed sack and dress-calico materials. The pale pink reverse and wonderfully soft, time-worn appearance make this a sweet display piece for a nursery, quilt collection, cottage interior, or antique textile wall display.
Condition:
Very good antique condition with expected age-related wear. The quilt is remarkably clean and has no overwhelming vintage odor detected.
There are several white marks or areas of color loss along the pink outer border. The reverse has a few faint storage, grease-like, or age-related marks, including one small orange-brown mark. All noted areas are pictured.
Light fabric puckering, unevenness, fading, and variations in the hand stitching are present and are part of the quilt’s handmade antique character. No major holes or extensive fabric loss observed.
