Original antique 1922 handwritten threshing account ledger with a wonderful illustrated Fine Groceries advertising cover.
This small account book was used during the 1922 harvest season to record threshing accounts. Before modern combines performed harvesting and threshing together, harvested grain was run through a threshing machine to separate the grain from the stalks and chaff. Threshing operations required records of the grain processed for different customers, quantities, amounts owed and payments received.
The front cover is handwritten:
“Mrs. J.M. Gollaher
Threshing Account
For the Year 1922”
Inside are numerous pages of original handwritten records with names, dates, grain entries, quantities, calculations, balances and payment notations. Entries reference grain including wheat, oats and barley, and include period account notations such as “Paid in Full.”
Unlike an unused antique account book, this is an actual surviving working record from the 1922 threshing season, with extensive period handwriting throughout.
The cover is especially attractive and collectible. Across the top is the wonderful period instruction:
“ALWAYS BRING THIS BOOK”
The illustrated grocery-store advertising design is headed “FINE GROCERIES” and advertises:
• Flour of All Grades
• Selected Teas
• Pure Coffees & Spices
• Butter & Cheese
• Foreign and Domestic Fruits
• Canned Fruits and Vegetables
The combination of the illustrated grocery advertising cover and the handwritten agricultural records inside makes this an unusual piece crossing several collecting areas — antique farm and agricultural history, threshing history, grain farming, handwritten business ledgers, early grocery advertising and 1920s ephemera.
Condition: Authentic antique working ledger showing over 100 years of age and use. Cover and pages have age-related toning, staining/soiling, creasing, edge and corner wear and general handling wear. Binding area shows age and wear. Handwriting varies in darkness and legibility. Numerous pages contain handwritten entries.
