Antique 1920s Bakelite Butterscotch Marbled Catalin Horse Racing Trophy Box:
$3995.99

An impressive and highly unusual Art Deco horse-racing trophy presentation box, built on a massive butterscotch Bakelite frame with full 1 cm thick walls. The rich marbled butterscotch color and density are characteristic of early premium Bakelite used for upscale custom objects.

The entire exterior is clad in hand-chased metal, finished in a bronze patina. This is not cast metal — every panel, ornament, and figure is created from thin white metal, expertly chased by hand, then patinated to resemble bronze.

All four sides feature dynamic relief panels depicting horse racing scenes, each with sharp tool marks and subtle modeling visible upon close inspection. The top is crowned with a galloping horse in high relief (with one expected flaw: the tail is missing, common for hand-applied metal ornament).

The backgrounds behind the figures show fine, individually tooled ground texture, an old-world technique indicating that this box was almost certainly a bespoke commission, likely created as a trophy or special presentation piece for a major racing event in the 1920s–1940s.

The butterscotch Bakelite body remains solid, thick, and impressive — much more substantial than typical boxes from the period. Combined with the chased metal overlays and sculptural feet, the result is a distinctive, one-of-a-kind object with tremendous decorative impact.

A remarkable piece for serious collectors of equestrian antiques, Bakelite, Art Deco metalwork, or historic racing memorabilia.
