Key Characteristics of 1920s Italian Grand Tour Vases

Motifs: These vases frequently featured Greco-Roman mythological scenes, hand-painted landscapes (like the silhouettes of Venetian landmarks or ruins in Rome), or applied three-dimensional elements like putti, grotesque masks, and griffin-shaped handles.Purpose: They served purely as elegant, scholarly decorative objects for the home, often displayed on mantels or in display cases to signal that the owner was educated, cultured, and well-traveled.
