Antique Civil War “Portraits of Prominent Federal Generals” – Framed Pair – Circa 1901Offered is a wonderful antique framed display featuring two period book illustrations titled “Portraits of Prominent Federal Generals.”These illustrations are associated with Henry Davenport Northrop’s Our Greater Country: Being a Standard History of the United States from the Discovery of the American Continent to the Present Time, published by National Publishing Co., Philadelphia, in 1901.The two illustrations depict numerous prominent Union/Federal military officers of the American Civil War. Visible names include Gordon Granger, Palmer, J.D. Cox, Thomas, Casey, Halleck, Franklin, Scott, Shields, Dix, Buell and others.The individual leaves are numbered 771 and 682, showing that these were originally separate pages that were later paired together to create this attractive Civil War display.Both pieces are housed together behind glass in a wood frame with gold-tone inner trim.The paper displays natural age toning, scattered foxing/discoloration and other age-related characteristics consistent with antique printed material. Printing and portraits remain strong and highly displayable.An excellent display piece for a collector of Civil War, Union Army, Federal military, American history, antique prints or historical memorabilia.Sold as pictured.I deliberately used “associated with” rather than saying “guaranteed original 1901 pages.” That’s safer for you as a seller until the sheets have been removed and physically authenticated. The archival record does establish that Northrop’s book was published in 1901 by National Publishing Co., and the Library of Congress supplied the digitized copy. Condition field: Antique pre-owned condition. Pages show age-related toning, foxing/spots and discoloration. Prints remain clear and display well. Frame shows normal age/use wear.
