This view captures Stockholm during the year of the General Art and Industrial Exposition (1897). The Katarina Elevator shown here was the original structure completed in 1883 (later replaced in the 1930s). At the time of this photo, it was a symbol of modern engineering, allowing residents to easily navigate the steep height difference between the Slussen waterfront and the heights of Södermalm. Underwood & Underwood were renowned for their "Travel System," which allowed Victorians to "visit" foreign capitals through these immersive 3D images.
