About This Piece:

Up for sale is an authentic piece of late 19th-century Americana. This antique No. 40 food chopper was patented on May 2, 1893, by Nelson R. Streeter & Co. out of Groton, NY. It features a heavy cast-iron open-loop handle with clear, raised lettering reading "N.R.S. & CO. GROTON, N.Y." on one side and "PATD. MAY 2 93. No. 40" on the other.

The handle connects to a classic configuration of interlocking, bell-shaped steel blades. In Victorian-era kitchens, this tool was stamped down inside a wooden bowl to finely chop vegetables, herbs, nuts, and meats.

This chopper is being sold in its original, found antique condition with a great rustic look.

    •    Metal: There is surface rust, discoloration, and a natural aged patina across the steel blades and cast-iron handle as shown. I have left it completely untouched so the new owner can decide whether to leave it rustic or restore it.

    •    Structure: The tool is structurally solid. The blades are intact with no major cracks or breaks. The original central slot-head screw is present and firmly holds the components The raised manufacturer text and patent dates on the cast iron handle remain crisp and highly legible.
