ITEM DETAILS & CONTEXT:
Dating to the late 1880s or 1890s, this formal studio portrait was taken by the prominent photographer H. J. Steer at his studio located at 38 Union Street, Stonehouse, Devon, England.
The photograph captures a classic Victorian family consisting of a mother, father, and three young children beautifully dressed in late-19th-century fashion—complete with intricate high lace collars and formal ruffles. Resting quietly on the studio floor at the very bottom center of the grouping is the family’s small, dark-furred pet dog.
The image is mounted to its original, premium heavy black-charcoal cardstock base featuring elegant, gold-foil embossed studio branding and matching gold-gilted outer edges.
