• The Setting: Published during the Spanish-American War (1898), this satirical illustration shows the two nations playing a high-stakes card game for the fate of Spain\'s colonial territories.
• The Dialogue: Práxedes Mateo Sagasta, wearing a crown representing the Spanish monarchy, rubs his head and complains, \"Me got a such a headache.\" Uncle Sam, confidently holding his hand, asks, \"Sagasta, what have you got?\"
• The Punchline: Above them, the text reads \"A ROYAL STRAIGHT FLUSH,\" referencing Uncle Sam\'s unbeatable hand. The cards visible in Uncle Sam\'s hand are labeled with territories targeted or won by the United States during the conflict: Cuba, Porto Rico (Puerto Rico), Havana, and the Philippine Islands.
