This is a rare and wonderfully preserved 19th-century aqua glass food bottle with its original paper label reading:
“Pure Grated Horse Radish – Put Up For Chas. Lawrence & Co., Importers and Wholesale Dealers in Fruits and Produce, 103 Commercial Street, Boston.”
The bottle features an applied top and smooth base, placing its manufacture in the 1880s–1890s. The glass has a pleasing aqua tint with visible bubbles and subtle character from the mold. The label is largely intact and very readable, with only minor staining and a small missing edge at the bottom.
Chas. Lawrence & Co. operated in Boston during the late 19th century as a produce wholesaler and commission merchant, likely distributing preserved items like this horseradish via local grocers and markets. Their storefront at 103 Commercial Street sat in the heart of Boston’s historic produce and shipping district.
This bottle is an excellent piece of Victorian-era food marketing and packaging history. Ideal for collectors of antique bottles, New England ephemera, or early advertising.
