Rare 17th–18th Century European Bronze Devotional Medal — S. MARIA (Virgin Mary) — 22mm
An authentic, high-relief bronze devotional medal sourced from Europe, dating to the late 17th or early 18th century (circa 1650–1750). This 22mm piece is a superb example of Baroque-era religious exonumia.
Front (Obverse)
Features a beautifully rendered profile bust of the Virgin Mary. The Latin inscription “S MAR” (Sancta Maria) is clearly visible along the upper right rim, providing a definitive identification.
Back (Reverse)
Depicts a secondary religious figure or devotional scene. Due to centuries of handled wear, the specific iconography is softened but retains its original cast character.
Patina & Construction
Boasts a rich, untouched forest-green and chocolate-brown “cabinet” patina that has not been chemically cleaned or altered. Solid cast bronze with an integrated (not soldered) suspension loop showing genuine cord wear — confirming its long-term use as a wearable token of faith.
Provenance
Found in Europe, representing the craftsmanship of Continental workshops (likely Italian or Spanish) during the height of the Counter-Reformation. A physical connection to 300+ years of history.
Condition
Authentic 17th–18th century bronze with a deep, stable natural patina. High-relief details remain visible. Uncleaned. Please refer to photos for exact condition.
