The composition is built around movement and counterweight — the staff gripped high, the cloak caught mid-billow, the body braced against a current that exists only in carved maple. The water at the base is sculpted in rolling waves, each crest individually resolved. The legs are anatomically worked — muscle definition visible through the carving, not suggested.
The beard and hair are strand by strand. The Child's curls are individual. The staff is a carved branch with bark texture running its full length — not a smooth rod, but a tree limb, knot and all.
The reverse shows the full ambition of the composition: the cloak billows away from the body in a single freestanding plane, carved through at multiple points with real air behind it. At this scale, in solid maple, that kind of undercutting carries real risk. The carver did it anyway. The back of the figure and the Child are fully resolved — no surface left unfinished.
The base is a separate darker-stained wooden plinth, octagonal, with a molded profile. The figure and base are finished in different tones — a deliberate choice that grounds the composition visually.
ANRI ceased all production in 2018. This piece will never be made again.
The craft that produced it is disappearing from the Alpine workshops, and pieces at this carving depth become harder to find every year. The Sculpture:
