The glass owes its characteristic shimmer to the high proportion of iron oxides in the sands of the Thuringian Forest. This sand, potash and lime are used to melt the raw material for this highly prized glass specialty. Typical for the Thuringian Forest glass are also the so-called Gispen, air bubbles enclosed in the glass, which characterize the original manufacturing process before the smelting furnace, which has been handed down for centuries.
