Ancient Egyptian Sarcophagus Panel.
A rather sizable fragment from a late period Egyptian Sarcophagus. This fragment depicts the goddess Nut, her tripartite wig, nose and chin being clearly depicted, with her red and black polychrome beaded dress and yellow arms by her side, yellow being the typical female color scheme in Egyptian art. She is facing a partial hieroglyph inscription descending in a column. The depiction on coffins was in the belief she would cradle and protect the deceased on their way to the realm of the dead. It is my assumption that this was an exterior back panel, though usually she was inside the coffin with the mummy.
For a similar depiction of Nut see the inside of the coffin lid of Butehamun, Museo Egizio Cat. 2237/02.
