Authentic Somali Hand Carved Wooden Mask – Mogadishu 1993, UNOSOM Ukrainian Peacekeeper SouvenirThis powerful and expressive African wooden mask was hand-carved in Mogadishu, Somalia, in 1993 during the UNOSOM peacekeeping mission. A Ukrainian peacekeeper serving there received it as a personal gift from local carvers.According to the story, the carvers gave him this mask in gratitude for his help: during that very difficult and hungry time, he shared food and supplies with them. In return, they carved and presented him this mask as a token of thanks and respect. The mask is made from very dense, heavy tropical hardwood. It has strong, realistic facial features, deeply carved expressive eyes that seem to look straight into the soul, and the characteristic scaled texture on the hair — a classic style of Somali carvers from that period.
History & ProvenanceThis mask is a genuine artifact from one of the most dramatic periods of modern Somali history. Created in 1993 at the height of the UN intervention in Mogadishu. Since then it has been carefully kept in a private Ukrainian collection and is now offered for sale for the first time. It carries a real human story of compassion and gratitude amid the chaos of war.
