Over 40 words penned on 7 inch high by 4-1/4 inch wide \"109, Banbury Road, Oxford\" stationery. Though not named, the letter is addressed to the American lecture manager Major James B. Pond. Now living in Oxford, the American diplomat & archaeologist writes \"Please strike us off your mailing list for circulars. We are not living in America & therefore take no interest in who lectures there. So it is pure waste of stamps & stationery - & my time in tearing the notices up!\" Signed \"W.H. Buckler\". The American diplomat & archaeologist William Hepburn Buckler (1867-1952) was born in Paris and educated in France & England. Matriculating from Trinity College, Cambridge, Buckler married the distinguished Byzantine scholar Georgina Grenfell Walrond. The couple lived in Baltimore, Maryland for the next 13 years. Passing the exam as a lark, Buckler served in the Foreign Service and served as Secretary at the American Legation in Madrid from 1907 1o 1909. He subsequently participated in the American-sponsored archaeological expeditions to Sardis from 1910 to 1914. At the outbreak of the First World War, Buckler volunteered with the ambulance corps in France before he was appointed as Special Agent at the United States Embassy in London. With direct lines of communications with Colonel E.M. House and the White House, Buckler was director of the embassy\'s \"Austro-Hungarian division\" and the resident expert on Balkan and Turkish affairs. He served as a special staff member fo the American Commission to Negotiate Peace in 1919 before retiring to Oxford where he concentrated on archaeological matters. His publications include \"Lydian Inscriptions\" and \"Greek and Latin Inscriptions\".
