ANTIQUE WmMcKINNON ROCKAWAY, NJ AXE
Here is a rare Wm McKinnonRockaway axe. I am lucky to live close to Rockaway and found this axe locally.I was attracted with the history of this axe so I dived into some localresearch and wrote an article about the McKinnon Axe Co. in Rockaway, NJ in2014 for the CRAFTS antique tool club newsletter. Many people have told me itis about the only article covering this company so I put it on my site for allto see.
This axe is a smaller head fellingaxe with the company name stamped – Wm McKINNON, ROCKAWAY NJ. It is a finesample of the Rockaway axe and probably the original handle. The axe with thehandle weighs 3-1/2 lbs. so the head may be 2-1/2- 3 lbs. - I am guessing. Total length of axe with handle is 26-3/4”long. It measures 4-3/8” straight across the curved cutting edge. It measures6-1/8” long from cutting edge to poll. The laid on forged steel cutting edgecan clearly be seen as a different metal then the rest of the axe. Some lightroughness on general axe. An earlier owner did clean-up some mushrooming on thepoll and touched the letter “J” at the end of the stamp for “ROCKAWAY NJ. Thehead is tight to handle but the handle is aged and worn not suitable forregular use but it is a really good sample of this early axe original handle. Overallthis axe head is in good condition and if wanted could be cleaned up better orleave as is.
