Retablosare a form of Mexican folk art, originating with the colonization of Mexico.Retablos were typically painted on tin, since it was cheap and plentifulbeginning in the 1800s, and originally peaked in the late 1800s, falling out offavor by the early 1920s with the spread of lithography for the creation ofart. Retablos were painted by local artisans and amateurs, and most were not signed.
Retabloswere not painted to be framed and preserved, but rather to worship or givethanks to various prophets or saints. The overwhelming majority of retablos featured New Testament subjects, with an estimated 33% depicting JesusChrist and an estimated 25% depicting the Virgin Mary in one form or another.Few retablos feature an Old Testament subject, makingthem quite rare!
