A little history lesson first ...
Edwards Brothers in Fenton, England, were a china and earthenware manufacturer operating under that name for certain periods in the late 19th century, with its roots in the John Edwards factory that moved to Fenton's King Street Works around 1850 and later included the "Brothers" in its name in the 1870s and again in the late 1880s to early 1900s. The company specialized in ironstone and semi-porcelain, with much of its output destined for the American market, and produced items for the bath, such as victory shape soap dishes. John Edwards initially partnered with James Edwards; after James left in 1865, John continued the business, with "& Co." added to the name between 1873 and 1879. The name "Edwards Bros" (or "Edwards Brothers") was used at different times.
And now on to this listing ...
Offered here is a rectangle serving dish with lid made by Edwards Bros. in Fenton England. The registration mark (80633) dates this piece precisely to 1887. The design is part of the Aesthetic Movement, done in polychrome transferware with a base color of brown and accent colors of orange and blue. Not counting the lid, this piece measures 10" (handle tip to handle tip) X 5 3/4" wide and stands about 2 1/2" high.
This piece is in excellent condition for its age! There is a small chip repair on the rim of the lid (See close up photo). If you wash by hand and avoid using anything abrasive, that repair should last just fine. There is also a hairline crack near one handle which seems to be age-related stress rather than impact damage. (See close up photo). It does not impact the integrity of the handle, and this piece can still be used without worry.
