14-PLAY ANGUS McBEAN SHAKESPEARE PHOTO SERIES
Perfection Form Company, Logan, Iowa
85 Original Educational Theatre Photographs
Offered is a remarkable surviving set of Shakespeare educational photo portfolios issued by The Perfection Form Company of Logan, Iowa and featuring photographs by renowned theatre photographer Angus McBean.
The collection consists of fourteen matching portfolios covering the following Shakespeare plays:
• Hamlet
• Othello
• The Tempest
• Antony and Cleopatra
• The Taming of the Shrew
• Twelfth Night
• Richard II
• Richard III
• The Merchant of Venice
• King Lear
• Julius Caesar
• Henry V
• Henry IV, Part I
• Henry IV, Part II
The portfolios contain approximately 85 original black-and-white glossy photographs, most portfolios containing 5 photographs and several containing 10. Each photograph identifies the play, act, and scene depicted.
The photographs appear to be based on Stratford Shakespeare productions photographed by Angus McBean, one of the most important theatre photographers of the twentieth century. McBean served as the principal photographer of Shakespeare productions at Stratford-upon-Avon during the postwar era, and his images are widely recognized for documenting a golden age of British theatre. I believe he photographed the Royal Shakespeare Company in the late 40\'s - early 60\'s. No doubt you will notice many famous actors in the photos.
Condition:• The glossy photographs are clean and well preserved.• No writing, markings, or significant damage noted on the 85 photos - except: All the The Twelfth Night photos have staple holes in the corners - see photos.• Original blue portfolio envelopes (thin paper) show shelf/storage wear consistent with age. The Tempest envelope has a tear - see photo. (Its photos are fine). Twelfth Night envelope has a small library stamp in upper right corner. Hamlet envelope has edge tear and small tape residue (photos are fine).• Photos have been spot-checked and appear complete within their individual portfolios. (But I have not located an original publisher checklist.)
No teaching guides or supplemental materials are included—only the original portfolio envelopes and photographs.
This is an uncommon opportunity to acquire a substantial surviving group of educational theatre materials rather than the single-play portfolios that occasionally surface. The collection would be of interest to Shakespeare scholars, theatre historians, Angus McBean collectors, libraries, archives, university theatre departments, and collectors of mid-century educational ephemera.
