Offered together is an unusually substantial collection of 42 antique color comic stereoviews by Herman Knutzen, copyright 1906. The collection comprises seven complete sequential series, Nos. 700 through 706, with all six cards (a–f) present for each numbered story.
Each six-card series presents a staged comic story that unfolds from one stereoscopic scene to the next, with printed captions beneath the images. The lot includes:
No. 700 (a–f), “The Industrious Painter and the Idle Apprentice” — painter and apprentice comic series
No. 701 (a–f) — portrait painter and dissatisfied customer comic series
No. 702 (a–f) — children, father and exploding pipe comic series
No. 703 (a–f) — comic performer/magician and egg trick series
No. 704 (a–f) — toothache and dentist comic series
No. 705 (a–f) — cellist/musician comic series
No. 706 (a–f) — street altercation comic series
42 stereoview cards total, with the complete run of Nos. 700–706 and no missing cards within any of the seven six-part sequences.
The cards feature vivid color staged scenes and period comic captions, some incorporating intentionally rendered dialect typical of comic material of the era. Each is marked along the side “Copyright 1906 by Herman Knutzen.”
The cards show normal evidence of their considerable age and handling, including varying edge and corner wear, light surface wear, occasional marks, toning or discoloration and other age-related imperfections. Overall, the images remain quite colorful and visually appealing. Please examine the photographs carefully for condition; the cards have been photographed by series so that all 42 cards and the completeness of each sequence can be evaluated.
