The attached monograph is intended only as a preliminary study of the troops and other passengers transported on the Army's ships to overseas destinations during the Second World War. It is based mainly upon files of the Movements Division and the Water Division, OCT, which at length became available when hostilities ended. Documentary sources were supplemented wherever possible by personal interviews with key persons, notably with Colonel D. E. Farr, the wartime Chief of the Movements Division in the Office of the Chief of Transportation, and with several of his former assistants. Contents: the initial phase, 1939-1941; effect of American entry into the war; the mechanics of outbound troop movements; inbound army passengers; naval personnel and other passengers; prisoners of war; wartime role of the Movements Division, OCT; troop movements at the ports; and trend and accomplishment.
