Pair of Antique Hidden Mother CDVs by St. Louis, Missouri, Photographer John A Scholten - One with Visible Fingers
The ornate logo on the back of these photos is identical and can reliably date this pair of photos to circa 1868 - 1873, when Scholten operated out of his Fifth Street Studio in St. Louis.
Each photo features a baby in a long white gown, typically worn for a Christening, and each child sits in exactly the same pose: leaning slightly forward and upright, with the left hand curled gently upwards in its lap and the right arm positioned on the arm rest of the chair, with flowing drapery typical of a hidden mother portrait behind them.
In the photo on the left, you can see the mother\'s disembodied fingers just above the baby\'s ear.
