An exceptional antique American blue-and-white stoneware cake crock bearing the historic S. S. Pierce Co. name of Boston and Brookline, Massachusetts.
The substantial cylindrical vessel features an elaborate molded grapevine design, with clusters of grapes, broad leaves, and scrolling vines rendered in cobalt blue against a pale gray-white salt-glazed ground.
A large rectangular advertising panel is incorporated into the decoration, displaying the S. S. Pierce Co. name above a heraldic shield, together with the inscriptions “Est. 1831,” “1894 Inc.,” and “Boston. Brookline.”
The matching circular lid continues the blue-and-white decorative treatment, completing the crock\'s distinctive architectural form.
The combination of richly modeled stoneware, historic commercial advertising, and restrained blue-and-white coloration makes this a compelling example of American utilitarian pottery, equally appealing to collectors of advertising stoneware and decorative Americana.
