For your consideration is an original 9 November 1992 black-and-white photograph personally signed in blue ink by Prince Louis Ferdinand of Prussia (19071994), head of the House of Hohenzollern, depicting him on his 85th birthday together with his grandson and dynastic successor Prince Georg Friedrich of Prussia (b. 1976). Measuring approximately 4.25 by 5.75 inches, the photograph bears Louis Ferdinands large manuscript signature Louis Ferdinand prominently across the lower image. The verso is entirely blank and unmarked, with no photographers stamp, agency credit, date, or later identification.
The scene belongs to the documented photographic coverage of Louis Ferdinands 85th birthday on 9 November 1992, when contemporary press photographers recorded him together with Georg Friedrich. By that date, Georg Friedrich had long occupied a central place in the Hohenzollern succession following the death of his father, Prince Louis Ferdinand Jr., in 1977. Less than two years after this photograph was taken, Georg Friedrich succeeded his grandfather as head of the House of Hohenzollern upon Louis Ferdinands death in 1994, giving the image particular significance as a late-life portrait of the dynastys incumbent head with his future successor.
