Born on 7 March 1930, he developed an interest in photography while studying at Cambridge, encouraged by his uncle, the theatrical designer Oliver Messel. After apprenticing with the society photographer Baron, he opened his own London studio in 1952 and quickly established himself through photographs of theatre, fashion, society, and the arts.Snowdon became especially noted for portraits that combined formal control with an unguarded, psychologically revealing quality. He photographed many leading figures of postwar British cultural life, including writers, actors, artists, designers, musicians, and members of the Royal Family. His work for Vogue, The Sunday Times Magazine, and later the Telegraph Magazine helped define the visual character of British editorial portraiture in the second half of the twentieth century. He was also influential in bringing a more relaxed and informal manner to royal photography, producing memorable images of Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Margaret, and later generations of the royal family. In 1960 he married Princess Margaret, sister of Queen Elizabeth II, and was subsequently created Earl of Snowdon. The marriage ended in divorce in 1978, but he continued to photograph the Royal Family throughout his life. Alongside photography, Snowdon worked in design and made documentary films. His experience of polio as a young man informed his long-standing advocacy for disabled people, and in 1981 he established the Snowdon Award Scheme, later known as Snowdon Trust, to support disabled students in higher education.Lord Snowdon remained professionally active into later life and was the subject of major exhibitions and publications devoted to his work. He died on 13 January 2017, aged eighty-six. His legacy rests on a distinctive body of portraiture that bridged royal, artistic, theatrical, and popular culture, and that remains an important record of British life from the 1950s onward.
