1980 National Association of Professional Baseball League Convention Medal Pin
These badges are from the personal collection of Dr. Paul Muchinsky, legendary pioneer collector and author of Baseball Pinback Buttons: A Photographically Illustrated Compendium and Price Guide.
These important National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues meetings were attended by the highest-level executives in professional baseball. The badges and pins are very reminiscent of World Series and All Star press pins, but in fact are many times rarer due to their extremely limited distribution. These are not even on the radar of most collectors (including, most notably, press-pin collectors) simply because they are rare (which, ironically, is also the reason there is no formal established market for the impressive early pins and badges, as there is for press pins).
In 1902, the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues was formed as an umbrella organization for minor leagues. An agreement between the major leagues and the new minor league association was written. The new document established league classifications, roster and salary limits and a system for drafting players. It recognized reserve lists and created a Board of Arbitration that was given the power to suspend players, clubs, or officials for violations. Patrick Powers was elected first president. The organization changed its name Minor League Baseball in 1999.
This group was formed in as a reaction to strife going on between the National League and the American League. The purpose of the organization was to govern minor league baseball in North America. In 1931 major league teams began affiliation with minor league teams and Branch Rickie, president of the St. Louis Cardinals, was the architect of the system which still exists today.
