1972 Vintage Wire Press Photo by ASSOCIATED PRESS.Diagram shows position of 21st game between Russian Boris Spassky (white pieces) and American Bobby Fischer (black pieces) after adjournment at 40 moves.
Spassky, the current World Chess Champion, trails challenger Fischer 11.5 to 8.5 in their title match. Fischer, placed well enough to win the game, resumes. According to some grandmasters, he would win the title if he wins this game.
The September 20, 1970 game was a fiercely contested battle at the Olympiad. Bobby Fischer played the Black pieces against the reigning world champion, Boris Spassky, utilizing the sharp Grünfeld Defence. Spassky managed to secure a hard-fought victory against Fischer in this particular matchup.Photo is Dated: September 5, 1972.
