According to “All About License Plates” the three character code letters FNA-FSF were originally assigned to Franklin County in southeast Washington starting in 1958. The 1958 change added an additional suffix letter to the FN prefix of passenger car plates sold between 1935 and 1957 in Pasco. Around 1966 or 1967 there was another change around prefix FPA when “WASH” 1963 plates were used up and Franklin County went back to a full “WASHINGTON” logo. The three letter series remained county-based until 1980 or 1982. Originally sold out of the Pasco office, this plate is representative of the white “WASH” base plate that replaced the green 1958 series.
FNU appears correct for the 1964 and 1965 stickers, indicating where the sequential issuing would have been in the county those years. As one of the lesser populated counties, Franklin was slower to transition to the later variety of “Washington” tags. King County began using “WASHINGTON” in April 1965. Franklin County evidently did not switch until the “WASH” plates ran out, possibly 1966 or later. A few “WASHINGTON” style may have come out of Franklin County, starting with FPA? 196?-1980, but they are pretty scarce. We don’t have info on what month that might have happened. Actually any plate out of Pasco is pretty scarce.
65+ years of age and expired. Condition as photographed. Could be some photography glare and shadows, not on the plate. Some frame sun shading and other minor signs of use.
