Frank (Buddy) Stubbs of Bellflower,Calif., riding a Harley-Davidson, raced toa new record for the distance in winningthe 100-miIc race.Stubbs, riding a machine tuned by hisfather, covered the 50 laps of the two-mile road course in 1 hour, 21 minutes,and 56.38 seconds for an average speedof 73.224 mph. The old record was 69.760set by Jody Nicholas of Nashville, on aBSA in 1961.Six riders were in the same lap whenStubbs took the checkered flag.Dick Guglielmana of Garden Grove,Calif., was second. He was on a Harley-Davidson and finished 53 seconds behindthe winner. Triumph rider Bill Lloyd,Langley Park, Md., was third, and Can-adian Donald Haddow, Quebec, wasfourth on a Triumph.The amateur was a hard fought racewith the lead changing manv times. Bud-dy Elmore, El Paso, led first, then DickNewell, El Monte, Calif., took overand was followed by Danton Craig, Ot-tawa, who held the lead until the 37thlap when his BSA went out and Stubbstook charge.
