A Navy high altitude research balloon leaves the deck of aircraft carrier USS Antietam operating in the Gulf of Mexico 5/4. The Navy hopes to send two \"sub astronauts\" to a height of 116,000 feet above the earth in the 411 foot balloon. The small, open gondola will be manned by Cmdr. Malcolm Ross and Lt. Cmdr. Victor Prather in an attempt to better the existing record of 103,000 feet held by Air Force Captain Joe Kettinger. Photo measures 5.5 x 9.25 inches. Photo is dated 5-5-1961. PHOTO FRONT PHOTO BACK
