The Vanguard, a navy rocket which the United States will use in an attempt to launch a 21 1/2 pound satellite to a 300 mile height by next March, is shown on its launching platform at Cape Canaveral, Florida. The outline shows the reported comparative size of the Russian T-2 rocket which was used to shoot the 184 pound Russian satellite 580 miles into space on October 4. The Vanguard is 72 feet long, the T-2 about 112. The Vanguard first stage engine was successfully tested October 23, carrying the rocket to a height of 109 miles.
