Original Vintage 1963 Indian Room Don Roth's Blackhawk Restaurant Menu New Frontier Festive Dining Wabash Avenue Randolph Chicago Loop Illinois
Otto Roth opened The Blackhawk on December 27, 1920, at 139 N. Wabash Avenue in Chicago's Loop. It became a big-band mecca, broadcasting nationally as 'Live! From the Blackhawk!' on WGN Radio and the Mutual network from 1926 and hosting Kay Kyser, Louis Prima, Doris Day and Mel Torme, who gave his first paid performance there in 1929. The Indian Room was its dining room, decorated with Black Hawk and Native American motifs down to tomahawk-emblem plates; after the orchestras ended in 1952, Don Roth made the food the draw with the tableside 'spinning salad bowl' and prime-rib carts, under the motto 'The Food's the Show.' The original downtown Blackhawk closed August 31, 1984.
