The photograph presents an attractive exterior view of the large ivy-covered mansion, including its tiled roof, numerous chimneys, upper-story windows, shaded veranda, landscaped grounds and broad lawn.
Constructed in 1918, The Knoll originally served as the official residence of Stanford University president Ray Lyman Wilbur. Wilbur occupied the house from 1918 until 1943. The building later housed Stanford’s Music Department and now serves as the home of the university’s Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics.
A developing or processing stamp on the reverse appears to be dated “SEP 20 1938,” placing this photograph during the period when The Knoll was still the university president’s residence. The reverse also bears a small handwritten inventory notation.
This is an appealing piece of Stanford University history featuring one of the campus’s distinctive historic buildings.
CONDITION
Good vintage condition with light age and handling wear. The photograph has minor corner and edge wear, light surface marks, scattered spotting and age toning. A small reddish-orange mark is visible near the lower portion of the image. The reverse has a faded processing stamp and handwritten notation. Please examine both scans carefully for the complete condition.
