Today for sale we have a framed original 1934 John Morrell and Company advertising calendar for Morrell’s Pride Ham and Bacon. The calendar comes from the Songs That Live Forever series, and this edition illustrates Love’s Old Sweet Song, the old parlor ballad remembered by the opening line Just a song at twilight. The color lithograph shows an evening parlor scene with a young woman playing piano by candlelight while couples in formal dress gather to listen, and the verse runs on a scroll beneath the art. The full month pad reads complete, with November 1934 on top and the October and December mini calendars flanking the song verse. A line along the border notes the calendar for 1933, 1934 and 1935 printed on the back of the last sheet. The bottom panel carries the Morrell’s Pride Ham and Bacon graphic with the red heart trademark and the John Morrell and Company line, general offices Ottumwa Iowa, since 1827. The print bears a 1933 John Morrell copyright and the Ketterlinus Litho Mfg Co imprint of Philadelphia and Chicago.
The piece sits in an ornate dark wood frame with a gold beaded liner under glass. A framer label on the back reads Macs Hobby and Craft of Salt Lake City dated December 2002, so the framing is a later addition and not original to the calendar. Measures 33 by 17 inches framed. Color stays strong and bright across the art and the calendar grid. Honest condition includes light toning and minor handling wear to the top margin near the title band and a faint old pencil notation on one date. Glass and frame are sound and ready to hang.
